The Viability of Scaling in a Distributed Spatial Cache Overlay

چکیده
Location-based services for mobile devices, such as route-planners, access data with spatial and temporal characteristics. How to balance the workloads for location-based services is an open problem. To investigate viable load-balancing mechanisms, we designed, implemented and measured a distributed, spatial cache overlay for two-dimensional, geographic data. In this paper, we describe an experimental setup to benchmark such a system and we discuss the challenges we faced. We measure relative scalability for different node counts, query rates and workload distributions and show that the system is able to achieve almost linear relative scalability for uniform distributions, but that load-balancing is required to ensure scalability under non-uniform or changing load. We present an outlook on future extensions to the system.

Using Network - level Support to Improve Cache
We present the design of a new distributed Web caching infrastructure that uses network-level mechanisms to provide routing of Web requests to caches. Our work is motivated by the need to provide eeective caching not only for the small number of extremely popular Web documents, but also for the large number of documents of only intermediate popularity. In currently existing and proposed systems...
متن کاملOverlay Caching Scheme for Overlay Networks
Recent years have seen a tremendous growth of interests in streaming continuous media such as video data over the Internet. This would create an enormous increase in the demand on various server and networking resources. To minimize service delays and to reduce loads placed on these resources, we propose an Overlay Caching Scheme (OCS) for overlay networks. OCS utilizes virtual cache structures...
متن کاملOSMOSIS: Scalable Delivery of Real-Time Streaming Media in Ad-Hoc Overlay Networks
Ad-hoc overlay networks are increasingly used for sharing static bulk content but their promise for scaling the delivery of on-demand, realtime content is yet to be tapped. In this paper, we show that overlay networks could be used efficiently to distribute popular real-time streaming media on-demand to a large number of clients. We propose and evaluate OSMOSIS a cache-and-relay end-system mult...
متن کاملTowards a Smart, Self-scaling Cooperative Web Cache
The traditional client/server architecture for web service delivery fails to naturally scale. This results in growing costs to the service provider for powerful hardware or extensive use of Content Distribution Networks. A P2P overlay network provides inherent scalability with multiple benefits to both clients and servers. In this paper, we provide analysis, design and prototype implementation ...
